PROLOGUE

The cold porcelain of the bathroom sink pressed against Alexandra Dupree’s forehead as she leaned against it, her stomach still heaving from its third early morning upset in as many days.  She dragged air into lungs starved by the unpleasant moments spent bent over the sink.

After a minute of doing nothing but breathe, she tentatively brought her body erect.  A small twinge of nausea hit her, but she was able to control it.  Okay, as unpleasant as this new early morning ritual had become, she had something even less pleasant to perform.  She stared at the small white stick with all the wariness she would feel for a snake found curled around the base of the commode.

Dimitri had been fanatical about using birth control.  So she’d convinced herself one late period didn’t mean anything, until she woke up heaving three days ago.  At first she’d thought she had the flu, sure there could be no possibility she was pregnant even though the condom had broken a month ago.  Her menses had come right on time a week later.

She still didn’t understand how this could be possible, but she had too many symptoms to deny.  Her breasts were tender.  She was tired all the time.  She’d cried when Dimitri told her he had to spend more time in Greece and wouldn’t be returning to their Paris apartment for several days.  She never cried.

She forced herself to do what was necessary for the pregnancy test.  Ten minutes later the world went white around the edges as she stared at the blue line confirming she carried the child of Dimitrius Petronides.

***

Dimitri clenched his fists, refusing to give vent to his frustration.

"You know it is time.  You are thirty, heh?  You need a wife, some babies, a home."  The older man’s gray head tilted arrogantly, while he fixed Dimitri with a look that said he would argue this to the ground.

Dimitri had no desire to argue anything with his grandfather.   He had barely survived a heart attack five days ago.  Dimitri smiled.  "I’m hardly in my dotage, Grandfather."

The man who had raised Dimitri and his brother since their parents’ deaths snorted.  "Don’t try to get around me with your charm.  It won’t work.  You’re my heir and I need to go to my grave knowing you will do your duty by the Petronides name."

Dimitri’s heart contracted.  "You are not going to die."

His grandfather shrugged.  "Who of us is to say when we will die?  But I’m old, Dimitrius.  My heart is not as strong as it once was.  Is it so much to ask you marry Phoebe now?  Why put it off?  She’s a sweet girl.  She’ll make you a proper Greek wife.  She’ll give you Petronides babies."

Eyes sliding shut, the older man breathed shallowly as if his short speech had taken more out of his weakened physical state than he had to give.  Dimitri wanted to do something, but he was powerless.  His grandfather’s doctors wanted the old man to have heart surgery, but he had refused to discuss it.

"Why won’t you have the by-pass operation your doctor is recommending?"

"Why won’t you marry?" the old man countered.  "Perhaps if I had great-grandchildren to look forward to, the pain of such an operation would be worth going through."

Dimitri felt the blood drain from his face.  "Are you saying you won’t have the operation if I don’t marry Phoebe Leonides?"

Dark blue eyes, so much like his own, opened to stare at Dimitri with all the stubbornness a Petronides male had to bear.  "Yes."

My Exciting News!!!

I have been waiting and waiting and waiting to share some super exciting news with you all and now I finally get to.  It's official.  It's even been announced by Publisher's Weekly in Publisher's Marketplace.  That makes it really official, right?

I have a new series with a new publisher!!!!  It's single title contemporary romance with my signature alpha heroes, deeply emotional stories and ahem...some very hot intimacy.

I was going to write a blurb about it, but honestly, the publisher said it best in their release announcement to PW: Lauren Plude, at Forever/ Grand Central Publishing recently acquired USA TODAY bestselling author, Lucy Monroe (Not Just the Greek's Wife, The Greek's Pregnant Lover) in a three book deal, launching a brand new contemporary stand-alone romance series called the Cailkirn Chronicles.  Set to publish in Spring 2015 back-to-back (April, May and June) the series takes place in Cailkirn, a small Alaskan town where the temperature might be cold, but the men are hot! World rights sold by Ethan Ellenberg of the Ethan Ellenberg Literary Agency.

Some of you may wonder how this came about and what is going to happen to my other series (the Goddard Project/Atrati for Brava and Children of the Moon for Berkley).  In answer, I have to begin by saying that this has been a year of crossroads and change, but particularly the past couple of months.  With the closing of Borders and many more independent bookstores in the past two years, everyone has taken a dip in sales and print runs and it has become more necessary than ever for authors and their publishers to really examine what is working and what isn't.

Added to that, for me, is the question: what do I *want* to write?  Which is closely linked to: who do I want to write for?  In the past, it was common knowledge that the publishing industry was slow to change, a behemoth that did not alter direction on a whim.  That is no longer true.  With the advent of affordable eReaders, wholesale closing of tons of bricks and mortar stores and numerous small presses popping onto the landscape, things are changing in my industry faster than I devour a new Presents by Lynne Graham.  You feel me?

So, enter one author (me) who really resists change into this super charged ball of combustible publishing energy.

First, let me start by saying: I am continuing with my Harlequin Presents and have a minimum of 3 books a year planned for the next THREE years.

I love my Atrati and secret agents, but Heat Seeker will be the last book in the series for the foreseeable future.

This is entirely my decision and was originally made with the understanding I would focus all my single title mojo on my Children of the Moon.  It had simply become too hard to maintain three different publishing careers and I had to choose.  However, in a turn of events that stunned me, the publisher lost enthusiasm for my Chrechte series, asking me to create a new paranormal world for them instead of writing any more COTM books.  The news came after I turned in Warrior's Moon.

I am committed to providing closure for the series for my readers, but when and how that will happen is still up in the air.  Just please be aware, it's on my "must do" list.

When my agent called with the news, I took a step back and really asked myself what I wanted to be writing if I couldn't write my Chrechte anymore.  I got advice from two of my most trusted friends and mentors in the business, but it was my big sister who put it into perspective best for me.  She said maybe the time had come to challenge myself.  Not write what I knew I could do, but write something new and different - bigger and better even.

Hubcap took me to the beach for a day, where we talked and walked and relaxed as he faced his own Nexus point in his career.  (Interesting how it all comes down at once, isn't it?  Career changes, both of us losing more family in the last year to death, two new grandbabies and our son taking a sabbatical from the family all coming so close together.)  We came home from playing hooky at the beach pretty set on what we were going to do and feeling a lot of peace about all of it, though the risks involved for both of us were/are huge.

Rather than sticking with what has become familiar, I opted to take a chance on a series idea that has been percolating in my head since my trip to Alaska this summer.  It's straight contemporary romance and I'm confident my readers are going to love it.  Why?  Because when I was deciding what I wanted to do, I did a lot of re-reading of reader letters in my soul searching.  (You all don't know what a difference you make to me.)  And do you know what I found?  My readers respond most vociferously, passionately and prolifically to my contemporary romance.

I also realized, I'm still grieving the loss of my Chrechte too much to consider writing another paranormal series right now.

If you want to read more about the new series and how it came to be, check out my interview on my new publisher's website.

I'm over the moon to be writing for Forever Romance at Grand Central Publishing and working with a new editor who is as excited about this series as I am.   Merry Christmas to me!  Really. Really. :)

Lauren (isn't she gorgeous?) encouraged me to share this with you all:  “I’m absolutely thrilled to have the chance to work with Lucy! I’ve long been a fan of hers and I’m excited to partner with her on this new and exciting chapter in her career. The Cailkirn Chronicles features stories full of the passion, hope, and heart that is so uniquely Lucy.  I know readers are going to be as taken with Cailkirn and its residents as I am--get ready, Lucy Monroe fans, we’re off to Alaska!”

Okay, seriously?  Who wouldn't be bouncing off the wall excited to be working with an editor who feels this way?  This business isn't easy and having an editor(s) who not only get my writing, but get me as a person is a gift I never take for granted.

There will be plenty of releases between now and the debut of the Cailkirn Chronicles, but I cannot wait to share these stories with you.  I think they really will be special and I'm hoping you all agree.

Mega hugs and happy reading into the New Year,
Lucy

CHAPTER ONE

Sexless mannequin.

The words reverberated through Bella Jackson’s head as she stepped out onto the catwalk.

“A man could get frostbite touching you.  You’re all smoke and no fire, babe.  If the world knew what a total fraud you are, you’d never get another modeling job again.  Who wants the original ice queen modeling clothes for today’s sensual woman?”  Curt’s vitriol echoed around her, drowning out the announcer’s modulated voice, even though the confrontation had taken place miles away and days ago.

She couldn’t forget.

Maybe because Curt had taken his story to the press and her face and body were plastered all over the tabloids with headlines that made her cringe.

Bella Jackson, Ice Queen or Sexpot?

Model Freezes Boyfriend Out of Bed

Lexi’s Creations Cover Model Fraud

Ex-boyfriend Says This Model’s Bed Needs an Electric Blanket to Stay Warm

And the one that had given her mother heart palpitations: Ex-boyfriend Speculates Bella is Gay.

She’d done hundreds of trunk shows in her ten year modeling career, but never had she been so nervous stepping onto a stage.

Had everyone in the audience seen the stories?  Were they laughing behind their hands as she modeled clothes that only a woman extremely in touch with her own sexuality would wear?

That woman was not Bella.

She didn’t have hang-ups, no matter what that jerk, Curt had said.  It was just that she’d been so career minded since her teens the whole man-woman thing had pretty much passed her by.  Not to mention the fact that she wasn’t interested in getting intimate with a man who couldn’t see beyond her body to the woman inside.

She’d had her bad experiences with idiots who thought her bra size was equivalent to her I.Q. and men who wanted a trophy on their arm, not a living, breathing woman in their life, so she’d pretty much stopped dating.  Until Curt.

When he’d pressed for sex, she’d been unable to share her secret with him...or her body.

The truth was, she hadn’t wanted to.

His kisses and what he’d wanted to do afterward had left her as cold as he’d accused her of being.

She was a twenty-six year old virgin with a reputation for extravagant sex and a supposed list of lovers the length of the Miami yellow pages.  It wasn’t her fault that the press speculated, or that men who hadn’t made it to first base had bragged about their homeruns, but neither had she denied the rumors.  Lexi said her reputation was good for the line and Bella had considered it another cost of her career.

Her bad-girl reputation had done its own job keeping her insulated from the type of men she could actually want.  The men attracted to the persona she presented to the world were very rarely the type of men she could be honestly attracted to.

Curt had been different, or so she’d thought.

She’d found out too late that the conservative accountant had only wanted the bad girl, not the real Bella.  He’d wanted to take a walk on the wild side with her as his tour guide.

The last daywear model was returning up the catwalk when the announcer introduced Lexi’s eveningwear and Bella began her signature glide down the Plexiglas stage, her hands damp and her heart beating too fast.

Subdued lighting made it possible for her to make eye contact with the audience, but that was the last thing she wanted.  Still, she couldn’t help subtly scanning the patrons seated in the ultra classy Dallas hotel, looking for signs that the tabloid stories had done their damage.

But this audience seemed just like all the others, their gazes fixed on her shocking white silk dress.

She was halfway down the catwalk when her gaze snagged on a pair of green eyes.  The color of new grass, they were set in a face as hard as granite and as sexy as sin.

The look in those eyes caught her as effectively as if the man’s hands had closed over her shoulders and halted her mid-step.  She did in fact stop, her body freezing with a blast of sensations totally alien to her.  Sensations that belied every one of the nasty headlines.

Her pause lasted only a second, but she felt the first blush she’d had in years crawling hotly up her skin.

The man’s thin lips quirked in a knowing smile.

Obviously aware that he was the cause of her hesitation, his expression reflected a mixture of mocking humor and blatant male approval.

She’d spent years learning to ignore the masculine admiration her body elicited.  For her, the perfectly proportioned curves were a tool of her trade, nothing more, but this man’s look went zinging to the very heart of her.

Frissons of awareness skittered along her nerve endings, leaving goose bumps of sensation in unlikely places.

She stopped at the end of the stage, which happened to be right in front of his table while two other models wearing eveningwear came down the catwalk to flank her.

His eyes flared with pleasure as she stood in a mannequin still pose before him and his dark blonde head tilted slightly, as if he was adjusting his angle to look at her better.

An electric current vibrated across the space between them, inexorably connecting them.  Unbelievably, her nipples grew hard and her breasts felt tight while her thighs trembled with the effort it took to maintain her pose.

She’d never reacted during a show this way.  Not ever.

Only years of practice and discipline made it possible for her to move through her choreographed routine with the other two models.  However, no matter which direction she turned, she felt that amazing connection.

It was scary.

Relief mixed with disappointment when the announcer cued her to return up the catwalk.  She walked away from the green-eyed man, supremely aware of the almost non-existent nature of the back of her gown.

It dipped to a V that ended right above her bottom, the white silk semi-transparent.  She wore minimal undergarments and if he was looking closely enough, he would see the shadow of her cheeks and the outline of her legs beneath the fabric.  Shards of excitement speared her inner thighs at the thought.

For the first time in her modeling career, she felt exposed, as if her body was more than a living mannequin used to show off a designer’s creations.

That the dress was in fact showing her off.

She could not help wondering what he thought of an outfit that left so little of her body’s secrets to the imagination.

***

Jake Barton watched the beautiful brunette retreat up the catwalk with the biggest, most painful hard-on he’d had in years...maybe ever.

It was such an unexpected turn-on that he wanted to howl at the moon.  “Damn it, Lise, you didn’t tell me this was going to be a lingerie show.”

“Shh,” his sister hissed from her seat beside him, not turning to look at him.  “Haut couture tends to be more revealing.  The lingerie comes later.”

“You’re kidding.”

“No, I’m not.  It’s on the program if you’d bothered to look at it.”

He looked at it now and sure enough, there was a finale of nightwear by Lexi.

He didn’t know how he was going to stand seeing the model who had been introduced as Bella in anything sexier without coming in his pants.

That little lady was a walking work of art.  A perfect pocket Venus.  She definitely didn’t fit the current trend of boy-thin, Amazon tall models that graced most magazine covers.

The other models in the show for Lexi’s Creations designed especially for petite women were small in stature too, but none of them had this model’s voluptuous curves or the air of sensual promise her pouting lips gave her.  Despite those sensual lips, her brown eyes had reflected an unconscious vulnerability that he found every bit as enticing as her sexy body.

For the first time since his sister had talked him into attending a series of trunk shows with her while she researched the professional world of fashion for her latest book, he thought he just might enjoy himself.

The program said the sexy beauty was the official cover model for Lexi Creations, which meant she would no doubt feature in all of the shows.  Considering the number of them he’d promised Lise he would attend, he would have ample opportunity to meet Bella.  He smiled, the prospect affecting his mood and his libido in a very definite way.

His dick was already making emphatic statements about what it wanted to do when they met and it wasn’t to engage in polite conversation.

The Non-Traditional Family

I love the holidays, which is probably why I decided to write a Christmas short story this year. Love at First Snow is not my typical book as it runs a little on the sweet side. It’s also a little more serious than most of my books, at least in the beginning. It confronts the issue of spending the holidays without a traditional family unit.

Christmas is a time for family, but what if you don’t have a traditional family made up of brothers, sisters, mother, father, grandparents, and aunts and uncles? Maybe they don’t exist anymore or maybe they’re just too far away or maybe you’ve never had a traditional family.

I know how this feels as I lost my father when I was three and my mother when I was twenty-five (my mother never remarried so there’s no stepfamily), and my only sibling about five years ago. I have plenty of relatives, but they’re hours away and have their own families with which to celebrate the holidays. My husband has three children but doesn’t see them for holidays, as they spend both holidays with their mother’s family. It’s always been that way, and we’ve accepted that it always will be that way, fair or not.

So hubbie and I created a non-traditional family made up of friends, step-family, and my ex-husband and his new wife and their daughter. Yes, you heard me correctly. We are good friends with my ex-husband. His son is essentially my son, and we introduced him to his new wife a few years ago. Definitely a non-traditional family, but it works for us.

In Love at First Snow, both the hero, Blake, and the heroine, Sarah, have lost those closest to them and find themselves alone at Christmas. On Christmas eve Blake finds an emaciated kitten near death in a snowbank. He takes the kitten to the vet clinic just in the nick of time as the veterinarian, Sarah, is about to close up for the night.

These two lonely souls find each other on Christmas Eve with the help of an injured kitten and a rare Orcas Island snowstorm. After all Christmas is about love and they find love on this magical night.

I wish you a very Happy Holidays and hope you surround yourself with your “family” and experience the joy of the season.

Love at First Snow

Christmas is a time for family--if you have a family.

Four years ago on Christmas Eve, NHL hockey player Blake Daniels lost his entire family in a float plane crash. Every Christmas Eve he mourns his losses by returning to the family vacation home in Friday Harbor, Washington, his family's destination that fateful night. Only this year he's also mourning the loss of his hockey career and wondering what's left to live for. When he finds a kitten starving and half frozen in a foot of snow, he rushes the tiny thing to the local animal hospital.

Still reeling from the unexpected loss of her father on Christmas Eve two years ago, Dr. Sarah Whitney opens the door to her clinic and finds a rough and tough professional athlete holding a minuscule kitten in his big hands. Only a miracle can save the frozen creature and only a miracle can heal the devastating losses suffered by both Sarah and Blake.

But Christmas is the time for healing and miracles if you only believe and give love a chance.

Holiday Reads - Week 4

This week we're gearing up for the December 4th standalone eBook release of Silver Bella from Samhain with a more comprehensive guest blog on holiday themed romance novels to get you into the spirit of the season.

Stop by and share your favorites for a chance to win a hardback of The Christmas Treasury of Romance with my story The Playboy's Seduction in it.  This story is almost impossible to come by in either print or electronic format and is another one readers email me about frequently.  I have very few author copies, so give them away RARELY.

This is your chance.  All you have to do is stop by the blog and leave a comment on my post to be entered in the contest.

Hugs and happy reading,
Lucy
