Men in Black

It seems I’m addicted to dark-clothed heroes. Okay, not much of a problem you might say, but when an editor pops a little note alongside the manuscript she’s editing and asks “doesn’t he have shirts in any other colour?” it might be time to revaluate my heroes’ wardrobe choices.

My current heroine is into colour. She categorises the heroes personality and mood through an analysis of the colours he chooses to wear—something which irritates the hell out of him J. According to her, his choice of dark colours (yep, some habits are hard to break) indicates his need to dominate and control and his craving for power.

Dark clothing on a man certainly makes a bold statement. It hints at mystery, danger, strength, authority and an untouchable quality that warns “approach me if you dare, but brace yourself for the consequences”. It’s sexy and sophisticated—formal, elegant, and prestigious—think dinner suit/black tie a la James Bond, especially in the guise of Timothy Dalton. Yum.

In movies the bad guy wears black, but so does the sexy bad boy. One of the first men to set my teenage heart a-flutter was Yul Brynner in The Magnificent Seven, while more recently I’ve palpitated to the likes of Gerard Butler as the black cloaked Phantom of the Opera, Christian Bale as Batman and, of course, there’s Dracula in his many screen guises. The vampire is perhaps the quintessential man in black—sexy, smouldering, dangerous. Here in the UK, we have a feast of dark clothed bad boys on TV. Aidan Turner as the vampire Mitchell in Being Human, Richard Armitage as Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood…the feast goes on. As for my addiction? I’d rather give up chocolate than my dark-clothed guys. And that’s saying something.

How about you? Who’s your favourite Man in Black?

Short Bio:

I love writing contemporary romance with sexy alpha males and the strong women who bring them to their knees. I've got one of those alphas at home, at least he likes to think he is :) It’s the best fun writing romantic fiction and letting all that passion flow from my fingers via the keyboard and onto the page. It's a tough job but I'm woman enough to handle it J

How about George Clooney in black? Great post btw.

Hey, Tricia...loved your post. I do adore a man in black. My favorite? Hubcap is wearing black today and he makes my heart pitter pat quite nicely. ;-)

Thanks so much for being a guest author at the RAH Conf!

Hugs,
Lucy

Hi Tricia,
Loved the pics this morning. Funny because I just started a new story and of course the very alpha hero is wearing a body molding 'black' shirt.

The other thing I tend to put my guys in are jeans.

Have a great day.

LOL! Men in Black always makes me think of that movie with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones--they sure look nice in black, too ;)

Yummmmmy! LOL Well, I know what you mean about Yul Brynner I fell in love with him during his stint in the King and I and he was definitely the quintessential man in black in Magnificent 7.

These days the guys that come to mind as "men in black" are Will Smith (of course!), Matt Damon (Jason Bourne), Hugh Jackman :sigh:, Timothy Dalton (great call) and George Clooney (this man was just blessed gene wise). Oh gosh, I almost forgot JOHNNY DEPP!! Ohhhh Johnny...Johnny. Erm...where was I?

I think I'd also go a step further and say some of the Romance Cover Models are my favorites. I don't know them by name but some of those men in black on the covers and inside flap really inspire the imagination. :)

What a great habit Tricia! When you think of all the other ones writer's tend to have with their writing, linking colors to your heroes is definitely one of the more sexy ones. Don't let them break you of it!

LM's Drama Queen said...

Mmmmm! Who doesn't love a man in black:) I think it's great you had your heroine go into the meanings of color though. I'm reading about that right now, as part of my fashion studies, and it really is interesting how much our personalities affect what we pull out of the closet. I know your editor will probably bop me over the head for saying this, but I think black works for the heroes you're describing. They wouldn't be caught dead in a bright blue tee! If the reader can believe it, I say "well done!"

rofl i'd ask does he need any other color.

This is hard, so I'll name the top 3 that popped into my head: Clive Owen, Craig Ferguson and Gerard Butler. Yes, their accents do me in :) And I gotta agree with Gabourey Sidibe about Gerard Butler: Who wouldn't hit that?!

Several you mentioned as well, Christian Bale and Aiden Turner especially (love Being Human - hope it's back on BBC America this summer!). Also, I can think of endless characters from books who were hot in black. So, don't let your editor deter you; this reader loves men in black!

Will Smith in men in black one and two. What about Richard Gere in pretty woman.

Yes, flchen1, Will and Tommy wear it well!

Valerie, Hugh Jackman and Johnny Depp ... thud!

1. Sean Connery
2. Gerard Butler
3. George Clooney

And heck yeah, to Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones!!

Hi Stephanie, I think this is one habit I'm happy to keep :) Thanks for stopping by.

Drama Queen, what a great thing to study. And no, my heroes wouldn't slip into bright blue :)

Pam, black is all he needs :)

Hi KatyM, Clive Owen and Craig Ferguson ... yum!

Oh yes, Sonya, Richard Gere!

Hi Terri, Pierce, Daniel and Sean are all sure to set my heart a-flutter.

Okay, now that was a distraction I probably didn't need. I just spent the last 10 minutes surfing the internet for bad boys in black. lol a bunch. There are a lot of good names here, so I'll just thank you for the post, Tricia. And the inspiration. :)

Toni said...

Have to say that mine have already been mentioned Will Smith, Sean Connrey, Roger Moore. I really am intregeted by this book and will put it on my list of books to look for at the library.

I think my love of old movies, black & white, adds to my love of men in black. Cary Grant always dressed in dark suits and with his black hair he always looked debonair!

Jane said...

I'll have to go with Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne/Batman. He fits a tux and the Bat suit nicely.

rhianona said...

part of my attraction to watching Stargate Atlantis is because of Joe Flannigan as John Sheppard. They tend to dress him in black and he looks delicious.

Farscape is another favorite of mine, not just for John Crichton (Ben Browder) but also for Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black) and their black leather outfits.

living in NY as I do, I am actually more attracted to a well-cut suit. And b/c it is NYC, I gravitate towards black... after all, that's what we tend to wear most of the time. ;)

Lillie said...

Wow, so many come to mind! I'll have to go with Blade, though. Rawr!

Tricia Jones said...

Hi Laurie, sorry about the distraction, but glad you enjoyed the inspiration :)

Tricia Jones said...

Hi Tony, thanks for your comments. Hope you enjoy the book.

Tricia Jones said...

Janet, good choice. Vin can always hold his own in any shade :)

Hi krisgils, oh yes, those military men can certainly raise the blood pressure.

Tricia Jones said...

Hey Sue, good point. I must search out those old b/w movies for some inspiration.

Tricia Jones said...

Ah yes, Dean from Supernatural. Good choice, Wendy.

Tricia Jones said...

Hey runner, another good choice.

Tricia Jones said...

Christian Bale certainly hits the spot, Jane :)

For sentimentality, it would be my dad. For drool-worthy, it would be J. Depp. For looking good in it, it would be Will Smith. For sophistication, it would be George Clooney. And I can't think of any other sub-types, but these are the ones that comes to mind right now.

erahime said...

I want to add Hugh Jackman for being a bad-ass in black clothing. Gotta agree with that one w/ the others.

Oh, and the Latin man in black would be Enrique Iglesias.

That's the trouble isn't it, Margay? Once you start, you can't stop. There are so many delicious men in black to choose from. Hmm, Mick St John, forgot about him. Lovely.

Kay, isn't it great how the men who stole our hearts as little girls, keep a special place there for always? Cary Grant certainly seems to be a particular favorite.

Tricia Jones said...

Sherry, how could I forget Shemar Moore? Wow.

Yes, those BBC men are something special, Joder. Glad you like Aidan, he's my man of the moment :)

Armenia, those rugged types get me every time. Oh so sexy.

Another Johnny Cash fan, Refhater. And of course, he's got that fabulous voice to go with it.

Hi Chelleyreads, those men are new to me. I'm so looking forward to checking them out.

Juliet, I agree. Mysterious and sexy.

Another Johnny Cash fan, eh Modokker? And yes, Mr Depp sure looks good in black.

Hollie, hmmmm, those men in suits with ties. I like the way you think :)

I agree with everyone about George Clooney!

I love a man in black - it lends the mysteriousness about him. Without it, he'd be revered as comical if he wore say a pink shirt and jeans and we wouldn't look to knowing more about him as we would be drawn to wanting to know about the tortured soul behind the mystery of the man in black! There almost is always a story with a man dressed in dark clothes! Wouldn't you agree?
