Deadly Fear by Cynthia Eden

I Like To Be Scared

Hi, everyone! Hope you’re enjoying Lucy’s fantastic RAH Conference! I have to admit, I love a conference that I can attend in my PJs.

Today, I thought I’d talk a little bit about fear. Ah, yes…fear. I enjoy reading books that keep me on the edge of my seat. I love watching movies that scare me. I guess I’m a fear junkie. I just like to be scared.

So, when it came time for me to write my books, I incorporated that fear. I wrote about “real” monsters—vampires, demons, and shifters. I made my hero and heroine fear, and I enjoyed it. Hmmm…is that wrong?

But, then I decided that, quite often, the things that truly scare me aren’t vampires and demons (I rather enjoy them). Instead, is the normal guys who turn into serial killers—the neighbor next door who has his wife’s body in the freezer—it’s those guys who really scare me. I took that fear, and I used it to write a new romantic suspense series. And, since I am such a fear addict, the very first book in that series is DEADLY FEAR.

In DEADLY FEAR, the killer forces his victims to face their worst fears. Now, when it comes to fear, I do fear lots of things. Snakes, wolves, being buried alive. I incorporated a few of my big fears into the story. Maybe it was even semi-therapeutic for me (or maybe not).

It seems that many people fear snakes. Tons of people fear flying (me!), and many, many people are afraid that something will happen to the people they love. Do you fall into any of these fear areas? Or do you have more unusual fears?

Because I’d love to know what scares you. J

Hope you enjoy the rest of the RAH Conference!

Okay I know you have already heard of me and my fears but the others haven't so here it goes. I am deadly scared of.....LADY BUGS.

I do not joke my friends make fun of me my family makes fun of me but those little bugger scare me shitless. Its so bad I have my kids, which are 6 and 3,either catch them and put them outside or kill them because I will not come near them.

Hey no one said fears were rational. I have no idea how I came to be so scared of them but I dred that time of year when they come around because we get alot of them.

Katy M said...

SPIDERS! I know they are good b/c they kill other nuisance bugs, but there is just something about the way they move *shudder*

And I definitely have the fear that family and other people I love will die suddenly, though it's not concious. In fact I'm accepting of death in my rational mind. My Nana will occasionally comment that she'll go (or hopes she goes) before my Poppop; I tell her that this is statistically improbable. But when either of my grandparents does eventually go, I know that I will be an emotional wreck, and it will rock our family's foundation. I would gladly say take me instead.

Hi Cynthia -

I'm afraid of spiders. Actually I just don't like bugs in general. When I was a kid, I screamed so loud at a spider, which was no bigger than a tip of a ball point pen, and almost gave my dad a heart attack from fright. My dad still shakes his head. LOL.

I use to love watching scary movies with my mom and sister but not so much as I've gotten older. Strange that I love reading paranormal romance books so much. I look forward to reading your new book!

Spiders, the big black hairy ones, can't stand them! And I don't like flying either.

But I love to read paranormals and romantic suspense, looking forward to reading DEADLY FEAR.

Patti Shenberger said...

Snakes are what scares me, and coming from someone who lives in the country I'm surrounded by them. Granted they are the harmless little garter snakes, BUT STILL.....

Ina said...

*argh* I hate all things that have more than 4 legs... spiders especially :/ and it doesn't count how important they are...
and try this: http://www.susya.ru/flash/fvp.swf
that scares me too!!!!
greetings, Ina

Victoria said...

I love snakes but those big fat juicy black spiders that hang out in the basement give me the creeps!

Jenn said...

Like everyone else I am afraid of most spiders and other bugs in general. It is not a paralizing fear but it is a fear.

I think one of my biggest fears is something happening to my children. I don't know how I would handle something terrible happening to them.

I have a hard time watching scary movies anymore because of how much better special effects are the movies are graphic. I don't mind the fear just don't show me the blood and guts and all that.

mountie9 said...

June Bugs -- I know its a strange one -- but seriously they fly right into your face and freak you out. I used to wake my dad up in the middle of the night to kill them for me.

My 8yr old loves to tease me about it!

flchen1 said...

Heights. But as other commenters have mentioned, real fear is at the thought of someone hurting my kids--that would completely send me over the edge. Plus the idea that the worst monsters are people who walk around looking "normal"--that is truly frightening...

Mrs. Hanson said...

Heights scare me, as do sidewalk grates. The second is an irrational fear (I won't walk on them) but I've had it so long, I can't seem to break it.

I'm looking forward to reading Deadly Fear -- congratulations on its upcoming release!

Sherry said...

I have a fear of heights and tell everyone that's the reason that I'm so short. But that's not my biggest fear. My biggest fear is the dark. I hate waking up in the middle of the night scared to death for no reason then laying there listening to see if I can hear anything. Sometimes I can really freak myself out at night. Where I work we pull 6 weeks of days then 6 weeks of nights. Most people I work with sleep better when we're on days I sleep better when we're on nights. I love to sleep during daytime because if you wake up from a bad dream I can see where everything is at and make sure no ones here but me.

Marilyn Shoemaker said...

Heights make me dizzy. However, flying in large or small planes, I'm ok.

Cynthia Eden said...

Morning, everyone! Thanks for checking out my post today!

LOL, Andrea, I will never forget you and your lady bugs!!You are totally right--our fears aren't always rational. I know Michael Myers is not hiding in my closet with a machete, but I still worry about him some nights. :-)

Hi, Katy! Oh, spiders--I feel your pain there. The bigger the spider, the more fear I feel. And I can certainly relate to your worry about your family--I think we can all relate to that!

Hey, Deb! Ah, another one with spider fears! Bugs creep me out, too. I love working in the garden, but I hate the creepies that come out at me. And I'm glad you're looking forward to my book--thank you!

Cynthia Eden said...

Eva, I HATE flying. I will drive just about any distance if I can avoid flying. Thanks for looking forward to Deadly Fear!

Oh, Patti, I hear you! I was walking around the neighborhood the other day and I found a dead snake. Terrified me! I'm tempted to start walking with a shovel--just in case one of those guys slithers my way.

Ha! Ina, I think I like your "more than 4 legs" rule!

Oh, Victoria, you had me at "big, fat, juicy black spiders." I don't think I'd ever be able to go in the basement.

Cynthia Eden said...

Hey, Jenn! So many of us are afraid of spiders. EVery interesting. When it comes to scary movies, I like to avoid the gore, too. Give me the psychological fear, and keep the gore!

Mountie, at night, those June bugs are going crazy around here! Two slipped in my house last night. Gah!

Flchen1, there are so many stories of the "normal" folks who do such horrific things--those are the ones that truly frighten me.

Cynthia Eden said...

Hey, Mrs. Hanson! Thanks for the congrats! :-) After I saw Stephen King's IT, I was afraid of sewer openings. I would do anything I could to stay away from those, so I can understand the sidewalk grate issue.

Thanks for all the comments! I hope you enjoy Lucy's RAH Conference!

Natasha A. said...

Yikes, fear huh?
I am definitely ok with MOST paranormal - although don't ever make me watch American Werewolf in London, as my brother made me - when I was 5! Nightmares for 2 years!!

I have issues with horror, I can't handle being scarred like that. I end up with nightmares.

I'm sitting here trying to explain it and I can't make sense of it! lol
I love Blade, Underworld, etc. BUT I can't watch Resident Evil or I am Legend *shudder*
I am ok with reading paranormal, but I can't read Stephen King or Dean Koontz.
Yeah, I have no idea! lol :D

What are my fears? Death. That is a biggie for me.
And I now have a cat that will come kill spiders whenever I ask, I am ok with those... lol

Anyways! lol

I am however looking forward to your new series!!

In an every day world, bees and heights make me shudder. Beyond that, though, it's the possibilities I can't see. Like the supernatural. For instance, I didn't watch the movie Poltergeist until I was married and had someone to sleep with that night. :)

Trisha Shands said...

Fears?

When awake my worst fears would be something bad happening to my kids (whether an accident, their health, etc...)

When asleep/in my dreams I'm afraid of heights and collapsing stairways (yeah, yeah, wouldn't they have a field day analyzing that!)

Dannyfiredragon said...

Hi Cynthia,

I can hardly wait to read your new series. I absolutely love your other books.

I am afraid of two things spiders and swimming (I nearly drowned twice)

Dannyfiredragon said...

Didn't know that you are afraid flying, I was afraid of it, too. Till I flew alone to the RT in Houston.

LM's Drama Queen said...

Just reading about everyone's fears is making me feel a little firghtened. *Shudders* I have a feeling none of us will be bored reading this series:) As far as my fears go, I would have to say the biggest one is if something really bad happened to the people that I love the most. But I'm definitely a sissy when it comes to creepy crawly nasty things too! My big brother loves bugs so he always used to get mad at me if I killed one when we were little. Even now, he insists on taking them outside instead of squishing them, LOL. Great comments, everyone!

I have the normal fears and then I have a weird, unexplainable fear of Lake Michigan. :blushes: I can't explain it, and thank goodness I don't live near it, but Lake Michigan is just unnatural! Ever since I can remember the thought of it makes me shudder. I don't like flying over it, by it or being able to see it.I can easily picture the dead rising out of it. Maybe I'll turn that angst into a Zombie book one day, who knows. LOL

Cynthia Eden said...

Hi, Sherry! I have to keep a bit of light on at night--either from the hall or a sliver of moonlight that comes in through the window. I hate waking to darkness! (So I feel you pain.)

Marilyn, you are braver than I am! I can't stand those small planes.

Hey, Natahsa! Oh, I loved Underworld, too--wasn't that a good one? Maybe you like the horror shows that end well--those in which the bad guys get stopped?
And thanks for looking forward to the new series!

Cynthia Eden said...

Hi, Laurie! As someone who is allergic to bees...those buzzers scare me too!!

LOL, Trisha, I'm sure a psychologist would love analyzing my fears, too!

Danny, that was a LONG flight for you!! You are brave! (By the way, I recently mailed a package to you! So be on the lookout for it!)

Hey, Drama Queen! Your big brother sounds like a sweetheart. I'm usually too scared of the bugs to try and save 'em.

Oh, wow...talk about the stuff to give you the bejeebes! I've recently discovered an irrational fear of VERY tight spaces - like the MRI machine. Shudder is right! :)

Thanks so much for being a special guest for the RAH Conf, Cynthia! Your series sounds intense and really good! :)

i'm afraid of the dark (especially after i scare myself silly with those criminal show i like to watch). i also don't really like heights but as long as I don't stand on the edge i'm okay.

I fall into the category of fear of losing a loved one. And I wouldn't say that I'm afraid of roaches as much as they make me VERY ill. And talking about spiders makes my head itch, but I'm not afraid to woman up and kill one myself. :)

rhianona said...

Spiders freak me out. A lot. Being forced to be submerged in sewage, which is a direct result of having watched Auvoir les enfants.

I adore snakes though. I think they are pretty awesome. I spent nearly 30 minutes once watching tentacle snakes eating a bunch of gold fish and minnows.

etirv said...

Vampires used to... but not anymore, thanks to paranormal romances! The state of the economy, that's really scary.

I am in the fear of bugs camp also, especially spiders.

But my biggest fear is fish! I am scared to death of them. I refuse to go into the ocean and will not even walk into the same room as a fish tank!

I am scared to death of spiders....other then that I get really freaked out by noises in the house. I have a big fear of water and heights. I almost drowned when I was small and I can't get past that to learn to swim. I had to fly on a business trip once and I did not enjoy it. The only thing worse would have been if we had flown over water.

I find people more scary than imaginary monsters. I'm a bit claustraphobic and the thought of being buried alive terrifies me.

Armenia said...

It must be watching too many "Nightmare on Elmstreet" movies because I have a fear of someone hiding under my bed and sticking me with knives...eww..just creepy! And of course, the fear of falling is up there, too.

s7anna said...

I'm very afraid of deep water, heights and clowns...I have the hardest time even getting into pools and always have to start off in the shallow end before I can bolster up my nerves to venture into the deep end. I'm also really leery of creepy crawlies...doesn't matter what kind...just not very fond of bugs & insects...

I have a weirdish phobia involving heights. Have no problem on mountains and such, but high bridges and tall buildings give me the willies. It's the fact that they are man made and subject to failure, I think.
My other fear is of getting old. Not age in general, but of the eyes getting bad enough that I won't be able to read anymore.
Thank god I'm not scared of spiders. Both my girls absolutely freak out about them and I have to take care of it.

Cynthia Eden said...

Oh, Valerie, you should definitely turn that into a zombie book! My husband has always wanted to do a screen play that he calls "Zombies from the Deep"--the zombies start walking up on the beaches.

Hi, Tricia! Hmmm...maybe the spiders sense your fear! Tricky buggers!

Thanks, LDee! I get sweaty seeing those jumpers too!

Lucy, thanks so much for inviting me to participate in RAH! And I'm glad you like the sound of my new series!

Cynthia Eden said...

Chelleyreads, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who watches all those shows and then gets scared!

Hi, Amanda! Since I live near a beach, I really should be afraid of that, too. But I've always been more afraid of a shark attack (though that is really unlikely down here).

Ack! Stephanie! I hate termites! They once took over my grandmother's house!

:-) Kellijo, I just had to woman up and kill a spider. It was crawling on me, so there was no choice.

Cynthia Eden said...

Okay, Laurele, anything with that many legs must be feared!

Thanks, Sonya! Glad you're looking forward to the series!

Maria, you're a woman of many fears--just like me!

Hi, Jamie! Yes, please give me the vamps--and keep the snakes away!

Hey, Rhianona! A snake lover? I wish I could be like that. Then I wouldn't spend my summer days in fear!

Cynthia Eden said...

Etirv, glad the romances helped ease your vamp fear!

Runner10--totally agree.

Joder, I worry about that too. So much to do! We all need way more time.

Robin K--you just mentioned a fear I'd forgetten. Ah--the dentist!

Stephanie, I hate it when I'm swimming at the beach and a school of fish swim around me. I always worry a bigger fish (shark!) is right behind them.

Cynthia Eden said...

Hi, nmulder! My house makes those noises! My grandmother used to say it was just a house settling down. But settling down for what?!

Oh, Linda, how terrifying for you! I wouldn't want to go back in the water, either, if that had happened to me. I'm actually so afraid of snakes b/c I was almost bitten by a rattle snake when I was a child.

Hi, Helen! Real people (dangerous real people) can be absolutely terrifying.

LOL, Armenia! Are you going to see the new Nightmare? The originals had me staying awake all night so I think I may have to skip it.

Thanks for sharing your fears with me! I hope you're enjoying the RAH Conference!

Fears. OMG I have quite a few of those snakes. spiders, of being alone, losing my hubby and Mom, losing my eyesight or hearing separately or together{ having cataracts growing sucks and I was born without eardrums so lost a percentage of my hearing which gradually gets worse every year} and finally not getting the credit to enlarge the house once I finally pay that last rent to own payment.{My house has a teeny tiny kitchen 5' wide by 8 ' long if I'm lucky, no closets for hanging clothes or storage and no upstairs bathroom. It's so old and has spiders everywhere, no matter how many times hubby has been dispatched to kill the critters.} Strangely I don't fear death like most people because I look forward to that day of no more pain. That's why I read, it's an awesome painkiller

I'm not afraid of snakes, I have one of those. However, I have a commplete phobia when it come to the big, scary...tick. No real reason behind it, but the nasty little things leave me frozen in fear.

Raonaid Luckwell said...

Living in the country for the bulk of my childhood, I'm use to insects and bugs. Then having a husband who loves reptiles I got over my fear of snakes and geckos and lizards period.

However, the sure way to get me to freak is the spiders. I can not even slip close to a window with a spider on the other side. I just have this feeling that it will slip beneath.

I've refused to go into a room where I seen a spider until someone took care of it.

Okay this may sound crazy but what really scares me is perfectly nice people that get drunk and they do a 180 degree turn around in there personality. This is from a lady that lived with an alcholic for 32 years. He was a great guy when he was sober but drunk my son and I would lock ourselves into his bedroom till we knew his father had passed out. When I see someone start to drink I head as far and as fas as I can in the opposite direction.

I think that there is always the fear of something happening to a person you love. I think that is a "normal" fear for anyone.

As for any unusual fear...wouldn't "fear" be unusual? To be scared of fear...that is something to think about.

I do have fears, and they are "normal" as normal as fears can be. I don't want to say them out loud, but I DO have them.

Refhater said...

I'm petrified of seagulls. I was once pooped on by one. It hit the top of my head and went EVERYWHERE. Down my face, arms, and head. I have OCD and had to take 3 showers before I felt clean again.

Now I flinch every time I see seagulls. And to make that vacation all the more fun, my travel companion thought it would be fun to feed the gulls from our balcony. So there were tons of them there every day expecting to be fed. After the poop incident it was like living in the Alfred Hitchcock "The Birds" movie.

Leigh D'Ansey said...

Well in my 50s, I'm still afraid of the dark. As a kid, my bedroom was at the end of the hallway. I used to start at one end, race down to my room and take a leap from the doorway to avoid any leg-dangling near that fearful place under my bed. I don't leap so well these days, but I still don't like my legs dangling over the side of the bed, or putting my hand out the window at night!
