A Confession by Kate Davies

I have a confession to make.

I’m a virgin.

No, not THAT kind of virgin. (Would have been a shock to my husband, too!) I’m an RT virgin.

Though I’ve attended a couple of RWA conferences, and some regional writing and sf/f cons over the years, this will be the first time I’ve ever attended an RT convention.

It’s exciting, sure; there are so many authors I look forward to meeting, not to mention the readers! I’ve read enough trip reports from past conventions to know that I’ll be getting little to no sleep and will stay running all day long. I’m looking forward to the events, and the chances to talk about one of my all-time favorite things – Romance!

But I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’m a teeny bit scared, too. See, I’m a bit of an introvert. I can be outgoing and cheerful and enthusiastic, but on the inside I’m tempted to look for a corner to huddle in and watch the excitement from the sidelines.

And then there’s the clothing. I’ve been sticking my fingers in my ears and going “lalalalala I can’t HEAR you” every time someone mentions the costume balls and the awards ceremony and anything else requiring a dress code of some sort or other, because I am the world’s worst shopper and pretty much live in jeans and sweaters. Unless it’s summer, then it’s shorts and t-shirts. Hey, that’s one of the perks of being a writer – I can schlep around my basement office in ultra-casual wear and no one is the wiser.

Except, of course, I just outed myself in this blog post. Erm, never mind.

I’m sure I’ll be spending the night before my flight flinging random articles of clothing in my suitcase and hoping there are at least a couple of items that match enough to wear in public.

But in the long run, all those details don’t really matter. I’m focusing on the fun – meeting authors I admire, hanging out with old friends, finding new friends and colleagues. And at the end of the week I’ll be posting my very own trip report, I’m sure.

Have a great time during the Readers At Home party – as someone who doesn’t go to these big shindigs more often than not, I thoroughly enjoy these sorts of online opportunities and am a little bit jealous of all of you.

Wear a sweatshirt and fuzzy slippers for me, okay? J

As soon as I get home for the day, I'll be putting on a big tee shirt and a pair of poplin pj pants - my leisure wear :)

Well, I won't tell you how comfortably dressed I am, but I will say your post hit a chord. I get nervous before conferences. Although I handle it differenly, being a list maker. I know what I'm taking and am 3/4 packed a week early. :) Have fun for me!

As an aside, I'm reading Lessons Learned. I forgot I had already read Lessons in Love and thoroughly enjoyed Brynn and Alex's story again. You really do diverse characterization well. Now I'm on to Lucia's story. And I'm lovin' the tension between her and Eric. Thanks for an excellent read!

While I'm frantically doing everything that needs doing before the official conference start at RT, I'm taking full advantage and wearing PJs all day today. LOL

Welcome, dear friend! So glad you could join as at RAH Conf before you take off for RT. :)

Thanks guys, now I want to be in my PJ's too ; ( I work in a college and half of the students are in their jammies today due to exams starting this week

You just listed everything that has been going through my mind. I am going to a readers convention in July (RomCon) and have never been to a convention before. I have been stressing out over everything that I need to do. I am also the kind to people watch and have to force myself sometimes to participate, I let nerves get the better of me. Glad to know I am not alone.
So has anyone been to a convention and attended all these balls that they have? How elaborate do they get?

Kate,

don't worry about RT, it's so much fun. I am a shy person too and I remember how nervous I was before my first RT but I had the best time of my life there.

limecello said...

Hi Kate - heh. Why not wear comfy clothes and a big sweatshirt there?! :X Kidding, kidding - but imagine how much more comfortable and possibly even happier everyone would be!

Lil said...

Kate,

I love your attitude. Go and focus on the importance of meeting people and having fun together. I rank with your on the world's shopper list. I don't have fuzzy slippers but am wearing snuggly non-slip slipper socks and thinking of you.

Stephanie said...

I salute you in my yoga pants and t-shirt Kate! lol A writer friend went last year for the first time and had so much time she didn't worry about being shy with all the fun she was having. Just enjoy the moment.

Hi Kate

This weekend I have my cousins bridal shower and all I want to wear is jeans and a tee. I keep thinking why do I have to dress up.

There are plenty of other people who feel the same way. I wear jeans and tee all the time. Thank goodness my job doesn't have a dress code! Unfortunately my day won't end until 10pm tonight so definitely PJs when I get home.

Have fun at the RT conference.

Hi Kate! I'm way over on the other side of the world in New Zealand - still in my jim jams.
Have a great time at the conference - enjoy the glitz and glam!

Jane said...

Have fun at your first RT. Can't wait to get in my jammies.

I'm an RT virgin, too! I'm excited and nervous at the same time.

The Ohio Valley Chapter is taking Charles Paz, RT's Mr. Romance 2009, to lunch at Schmidt's in German Village on Thursday at 11:30. We can fit 100 in the banquet room, so if any of you would like to join us, contact me on Facebook or Twitter. The more the merrier!

Jami Davenport said...

Kate, I wish I could be there. We'd have a good time. Remember the Pilots in RWA a few years ago? We just need Allie to join us in the fun.

I know you'll have great fun without Allie and me. Maybe someday I can make the trip but my day job limits me to conferences after April 20th. So next year is out.

You'll be just fine so don't fret.

flchen1 said...

Kate, thanks for sharing with us! You're going to have a marvelous time, PJs or no! I definitely tend to schlump around in what my kids call "inside clothes" all the time, so getting glammed up is a big deal :) As for the introvert part, if you focus on the small group and one-on-one interactions, the whole conference will just fly by! Remember that there's always someone who's probably feeling even more out-of-water than you are; find her and say hi :)

Have a blast, Kate! Next time, you'll be a pro!

Diana said...

thanks so much for your honesty! I too am so not a fan of dressing up! In fact I talked myself out of going to the conference this year cause I was so worried about the costume parties. Maybe next year I will put my big girl panties on and make concrete plans to attend!

Amanda said...

I need to try and make it out there next year!

Armenia said...

I've been to RT. Ah, someday....I'll have to start gearing for next year. Take lots of pictures. Have fun!

Lisa F. said...

I'm just like you, Kate. Basically shy until I get to know you, then (according to my family), I never shut up. I like comfortable clothes too. I feel like I've reached a stage where the only person I have to satisfy is myself so it's shorts and tees and flannel pants at home.

Thediscoera said...

I think you sound so cool - you are not alone - I'm an introvert myself - I try to pretend I'm not but in reality I'm dying from the inside. I much prefer jeans and sneakers with a tee-shirt or a comfy sweater. As soon as I have to start dressing, it becomes a nightmare for me. I go through not know what to wear to nothing looking look on me to not knowing how to walk on heels to why should I apply makeup and when I do which I don't ever I feel like a clown. It's a disaster everytime, but I deal with it and I have my Bff to help me out. I feel most comfortable when I can be myself.

Hi Kate...I'm heading into comfy clothes right now.Just got home from work and a pr.of shorts and a nice big t-shirt are calling my name!Hopefully you'll be able to "chill" soon!

Kate, I'm a comfy clothes hound. If I didn't have to look somewhat presentable, I'd wear jeans, flip-flops and T-shirts 7 days a week. I haven't been to RT, but I'll be attending my first RWA conference this summer and I'm having my own freak out over wardrobe.

What does casual dress mean anyway??

Valerie said...

Haha! I'm all about the comfort. I work from home 99% of the time. Often my day starts at 6 a.m. and I wake up to my email. There have been a few days where I've stayed in my jammies all day long and I have to tell you that was decadent. Plus, I was really productive because I was so comfortable. :) But I get it, I'm spoiled, and I love it. When I have to dress up in business clothes to go to the main office it brings me close to tears. I don't even buy those sort of clothes anymore...speaking of which I have to go in tomorrow. What am I going to wear?? Aaah!!!

Cathy M said...

I am a total introvert too, Kate, and wouldn't even attempt a big gathering unless I went with my best girlfriends or sisters. And I have no creative side to draw from when it comes to the costumes, I think I missed out on that gene.

I think that remembering to have fun is the key, just enjoy the heck out of whatever you are doing.

TeaGee said...

I would love to work in jeans, PJs, etc. but, since I can't, I will just live vicariously through you! LOL I can't wait to hear more of your RT(virgin) adventures! :D

nmulder81 said...

I'm sure everything will go smoothly...I hate hate hate wearing anything dressy so I def feel your pain. Getting me in any type of heel requires either a marriage or a dead person...and even the latter I might not...b/c well they are dead...dont think they care much lol. Have fun! Someday Id love to be able to afford the trip!

LOBeanie said...

Thank you Kate for sharing your "secrets"! :) I am still in my jmas. It is great getting to see a more personal side of you writers! I swear, sometimes getting lost in a fantastic love story saves my sanity!

Conventions, regardless of whether they are for books or sci fi or comics, all share a similar aspect: they are lots of fun and extremely exhausting. Regardless of how prepared you think you are, you are never as fully prepared as you think.

The first (and only) time I went to RT, I had no idea what I was getting into and in some ways, I'm happy about that b/c it meant I had no preconceptions. Of course, I didn't go to the costume ball until near the end and I didn't go to the awards dinner either. But I did have a wonderful time and you will too.

Have fun! And I will wear some pajama pants and a t-shirt for you ;)

Kate, have a wonderful time and enjoy the fun. I've read old trip reports and viewed photos as well. The ball sounds like a lot of fun if one is into costumes.

Looking forward to hearing about your experience. Btw, I'm wearing "fuzzy" slippers.

I just started work again today after being laid off 4 months ago. So that meant getting out of my pajamas and workout clothes and into my business attire again!

I was home for about 30 seconds this evening before I changed :)

Nichole said...

I'm very much an introvert too. Even though I'd love to be able to go to confrences I think I would spend more time holding up the walls then I would talking to anyone. I teach Kindergarten so I can get away with Jeans and a nice top everyday. And one day a year on our Polar Express Sleepover day I get to wear jammies.

I don't wear pj's but when I'm home I love to lay around in a big loose t-shirt and cotton shorts. I'm not big on conventions if I ever got to go I'd be to shy to talk to anyone although I'm not as bad a I once was. I can now talk to people a little bit better.

Have fun! I go to DragonCon in Atlanta every year, and as much as I complain about all the prep work and how exhausted I am when it's over, I love every second of it.

GladysMP said...

So you, too, are shy. I wss so shy in high school that I don't think anyone knew I was there. Students had to make an effort meet me because I was too timid to start a conversation. And, of all things to happen, I ended up marrying the boy elected the most popular boy in our high school. Maybe opposites do attract. Fortunately my husband has helped me overcome a bit of my shyness, but I realize how much I missed in high school. I hope your meeting proves to be a bang-up good time!

I am officially home from work, and the first thing I did upon arriving was to kick off the shoes. Second was to throw on the capris and tshirt and third was hop on the computer to see what was happening here. Now I am relaxed, I'm waiting for dinner to be served (my boys cook since I work) and then it will be time for my favorite tv show.

Refhater said...

I once heard somewhere that jeans are the "New little black dress."
You can dress them up with a nice top and/or jacket or simply wear them with a t-shirt.

The people are there to meet you, not your clothes, so I say to be yourself and wear what you feel the most comfortable in.

Have fun whatever you wear! Thanks for sharing with us.

I only recently learned of these types of conventions, wasn't in the budget to go this year but I always like to dress comfortably when I'm home, either in jeans and a tshirt or in a large tshirt and lounge pants

I'[m wearing the sweats for you...LOL. I so how to be able to go to an RT conference one day. I just have to be careful and not bring the sweats...LOL.

Heather D said...

I guess schlepping around in comfy clothes is a great advantage of being a stay at home mom! Any time my husband says "Honey, you have to accompany me on a business trip" I cringe. This means that I have to dig out the slacks, shop for new tops, and pray that my feet will make it through the day in something other than flip-flops or tennis shoes.

erahime said...

Everyone is wearing sweats today. lol

Me, a ripped pj bottom and a t-shirt. I plan to change into...more comfy clothes like a cute short and another t-shirt. Nothing much has changed except it'll be clean and smelling fresh. :)

I haven't been to any convention. I plan to someday, but my finances is not able to cover the expenses. *shrugs* Oh, well, there's always more in the future.

I do want to wish everyone who is attending RT a cheerful good luck & have fun there. Someday I'll attend. Someday...

Hi Kate,
The RT conf is on my want to do list. But, I share your feelings about dressing up. Especially costume parties. That was one of the best things about Sleepless in Silverdale conf. we got to wear PJ's to the dinner.

You'll be a pro after this and it will make it easier for us newby's to have you when we venture out.

Have fun.

Well, if it will help, I'm sitting in bed with my laptop in my pj's. Have fun, I haven't been to RT and the thought of having to buy fancy clothes on top of also having to pay admission is stressfull- glad I'm at home.

I wish you luck. I have a dream of going some day myself. I think it would be great to meet all the authors I get to talk to online and some of those that don't. I almost made it a few yrs back, lost my job and had to go to school to learn a new kind of job.

Maybe in a couple of more years I'll have my dream of making it RT. icia

I'm loving all the pro-comfy comments! I'm ready to get in my jammies now myself.

Almost done with the packing; I'm highly amused that the woman who wears a dress almost never is packing almost nothing else. Should be an interesting week!

Enjoy the at-home party, and I'll do my best to check in and chat when I can!
