Chores...chores and more chores...

Well, we had the big talk with the teens the other night about chores. There's just so much stuff competing for their time, but how can they grow into responsible adults if they don't learn how to take care of themselves, yeah? So...well, to help them along, we're turning of cable to their television. We didn't have TV for the first 15 years of our marriage and only got it when my mom had a stroke, so she could watch it while she was staying with us. We kept it because the kids enjoyed it, but now well...it's taking too much time. And the kids get grumpy after watching too much TV too. I don't like that.

So, we're also cutting back to the basic cable for the projector screen set-up my mom uses when she's over. We're only keeping it at all for her sake and that of my b-i-l who likes to watch the superbowl on our projection screen. But obviously, lots of people love TV and I swear I would too if it wasn't such a drain on my family's time. I've got my favorite shows I'll miss if they aren't on basic cable - Psych, SG1 (which is in it's final season) and maybe Eureka. But I don't have time to watch them every week (thank goodness for re-runs, yeah?) and my kids...oy...it was time for a change. Do you know not one of them complained about it. Weird, huh? But cool. :)

Discussion question: what are your TV viewing habits? Do you like it, or do you find it a nuisance? What's your favorite show(s)?

Um, I don't watch t.v., haven't for about 3 years. And I was a HUGE t.v. watcher, so it took a little getting used to, but now I'm fine. I don't miss reality t.v., or some of the other stuff out there. I mostly miss the shows that are no longer on the air - Buffy, X-Files, Friends. But I've adjusted and I think I'm doing just fine...at least I think so LOL. I do kinda want to see what all the fuss is about regarding "Grey's Anatomy", but I'll live...

Ugh...I should have never watched some of this seasons new shows, because now I'm addicted. And this is such a drain on my time, too. Some of my new favorites are Heroes, Jericho, and Ugly Betty (I used to watch the Spanish versions :-)) I need to learn to record these shows :-)

I don't watch much TV, so when the cable company put up their rates once again, I had it disconnected and went with just the basic cable that is free. So I have 5 stations that I can get and that is it. I did this about 4-5 years ago and have not regretted the decision. Even when I had my grandson living with me for a year, he was happy to watch DVD's or VHS movies when he watched TV, so it was all good.

I am like Stacy though sometimes when I read/hear about some of the shows, I would kind of like to see for myself what the fuss is all about, but I don't regret my decision enough to get hooked up to cable again.........LOL

I tend to record my favorite shows to watch later. I am not a fan of commercials and recording is easier for me.

My favorite shows right now are probably Criminal Minds and House.

I LOVE House!! AS for t.v. viewing, we have Dish, but use it for backgoround noise alot, my DH works till late and it keeps the house from becoming too quiet. But, if we miss a show that we like, nothing to it, we just miss it.

We are constantly busy...it never ends. But, I always make time for a few of my favorite shows. Eureka..LOVE that show! and Jericho...cute guy. Supernatural, another great show with cute guys...I'm seeing a pattern here. LOL

Since I a away alot on business I turn the TV on in the hotel room -- mostly for noise. I may read, work on the PC, etc... and not really pay attention.

If I get the chance I'll watch Grey's Anatomy.

Okay...I'll fess...most dramas on television totally stress me out. I absolutely hate soap operas (those that play at night too) because there's so much angst and every good resolution eventually gets turned over. Now, some dramas I really can love - like Stargate SG1.

Remember shows like Starsky & Hutch...drama with a little comedy? The movie made me so mad because it was straight comedy, a total parody and I was expecting something deeper. Campy maybe, but deeper. LOL

Our rule has always been one hour of TV for the kids on school days, and that is only after homework and chores are done. I leave a "honey-do" list for them (and the hubby *g*) every day, so that their chores get spread out during the week. Their 1 hour includes any time that the TV is on, so it includes Playstation time, movies, etc. The only time the restriction is lifted is for family-time viewing, such as Monday Night Football, which we've always watched as a family.

On the weekend, if chores are all done, the TV restriction gets lifted. This has always worked really well for us, and it gets the kids out of the house and out playing with their friends instead of being couch potatoes.

Hubby and I don't watch too much anyway, although I admit to being addicted to The Daily Show and a couple others.

I've really been limiting my TV time since I started writing. It was taking up all my time. My writing time is already so limited with my toddler that I need all the time I can get. Also, I was just watching too much TV. Now I watch Lost every Wednesday and One Life To Live during th day time and thats it! For now at least :)

I probably watch too much TV, but thanks to the magic of tivo (so I tell myself - big grin) I tivo much of what I like to watch and watch it on my time rather than when it's scheduled and fast forward through the commercials, so my watching time is more efficient(so I tell myself LOL). I enjoy the Law and Orders, The Dead Zone, Crossing Jordan and The Closer. A sometimes guilty pleasure is Dr. 90210, but how many times can you really watch Dr. Rey give someone a breast augmentation? ;)

Oh I'm totally hooked. Boston Legal, Greys, CSI, NICS, CNN, Survivor...I purposely didn't look at any new shows and keep myself to just one reality show. At least I always do two things at once - I'm on the computer mostly but would do needle point, cross words, jig saw puzzles, etc.

My one daughter loves TV but my other one totally ignores it.

I don't think I've watched TV regularly for years now and I used to have a ton of shows that I hated to miss. So, thanks to DVD, I'm watching my old favs again. The only "new" show I adore was actually cancelled last year in its first season -- The Night Stalker. Others are Lonesome Dove, Renegade, The Sentinel, and one of my all-time favs, which will date me terribly, Have Gun-Will Travel. How's that for ancient history!?

Congrats on the sale to Samhain, Lucy. They're looking at one of my westerns at the moment, so wish me luck!!

Love & Hugs,
Denyse

I used to be hooked on C.S.I., but now I'm tired of it. Instead I'm hooked on Doctor Who and Code Name: Eternity and sometimes I watch the reruns of Golden Girls and Third Rock From the Sun. Only soap opera I've ever liked is Soap. I love nature documentaries, especially if David Attenborough is in them and detective series that are made by the BBC. And I miss Due South.

I think one of the reasons television can be so addictive is because there are a lot of good programs out there. Sure, there's a lot of junk too, but the same is true in the Internet and we all know I'm a computer junkie. LOL

Brandy said...

Denyse, the new Night Stalker is now in the Sci-Fi channel. I used to watch the old series on there too.

Judy F said...

I know I watch more then I should. I tape alot with working two jobs. I really like the CSI shows.

Lucy did you check your mail yet????

Denyse said...

Brandy, Hi!! Yeah, I know the series is on Sci-Fi, but here in Canada, I don't get that one!! So, after waiting months, I've finally got the DVDs in my hot little hands, and I'm savouring the episodes, one a night... I'm totally addicted to Stuart Townsend, so this is heaven. (Hell, I'm even linked to his best fansite!! *lol*)

This is fun, Lucy!!!

Hugs to all...
