A little heat, a lotta movies

One thing I'm not missing by not going to Atlanta is the HEAT! Is it hot everywhere in this country right now or what? We had a heat wave pass through in Seattle last weekend and it was brutal. See, they don't believe in air conditioning out here in the Pacific Northwest, at least that's how it seems to this Midwestern girl. They say it never gets hotter than 80 here in the summer... guess what? It hit 101 degrees last weekend -- yikes! The ice cubes were melting in the grande, triple shot, iced mochas that everyone drinks around here.

My family and I (husband, two teenagers, two dogs and three cats) moved here three years ago and I'm still baffled by the lack of a/c because in Chicago if you didn't have a/c you might as well jump in Lake Michigan (or spend the day shopping at Water Tower Place ... hmmm ... now there's a thought). The good news about the heat wave is that it gives me an excuse to catch up on my movies! I saw The Devil Wears Prada, Lady in the Water and Monster House all in one weekend. Have you seen any good movies lately? Are you looking forward to any?

When not at the movies, I'm writing romantic suspense and romantic comedy novels. I have two books coming out this fall: my debut for Harlequin Intrigue, "Silent Memories" and "Love on the Ropes" a romantic comedy for Dorchester. This is the third in my series set in professional wresting and I'm giving away copies of the first two books, "Got a Hold on You" and "Ring Around My Heart" so... shoot me an e-mail and I'll drop your name in the hat to win a free book.

Okay, okay, I can't resist. Since we're talking about the heat, here's a line from one of my most fav movies. Talk about intrigue!

Can you name the movie? "Whatever you do, don't talk about the heat." (Hint: actor who says these words was nominated for an Academy Award for History of Violence.)

I've also got a new website launching in August and will be celebrating with a contest there as well. (www.patwhitebooks.com)

Thank you to Madame Lucy Monroe for inviting me to this awesome party! She is just the best.

Cheers!

Hi Pat!
How are you? Besides hot that is. I live in an old apt. in RI and we don't have air conditioning either. The heat and humidity are terrible!
I don't know what movie the quote is from. :-(
I am so looking forward to all your new releases. And, I'm looking forward to seeing LADY. How was it? It's really nice to "see" you here today. :-)

Hi Pat! I can't think of what movie that's from! Your books look really good and I look foward to reading them!

Your books sound interesting. I love the name "Silent Memories". Very evocative! I'll have to check them out come fall. As for the movie quote, I'm guessing it's Viggo Mortenson (aka Aragorn) and the movie most likely is Hidalgo?

This is fun! A cool way to beat the heat. Thanks,Pat! Thanks, Lucy!

Hi Pat! I have never read any of your books, but I will definately look into them now. They sound great.
I don't know where I would be with out A/C it's been so hot here in Cincinnati it's not quite so humid this week but I would die with out the A/C.

Hi Pat!
I'm not sure what movie that is from. I have only gone to the theater to take the kids lately. We saw "Cars" which was a cute children's movie. I have watched a few good DVD's lately. I liked "In Her Shoes" and "Match Point".

bamabelle said...

Oh, by the way, it is very hot here in Alabama. I am trying to stay inside as much as possible lol.

Darla said...

Viggo Mortensen! Hot, Hot, Hot!

I want to see all three of those movies. Did you enjoy Lady in the Water? I've heard mixed reviews, but I've really liked his others, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Good Luck with the heat! I'm hoping it gets a bit better starting tomorrow (I know, wishful thinking. LOL)...were helping my mom move...I'm taking 2, 5 gallon water jugs and leaving one at each location. LOL

Hi Pat,

sorry no idea which movie it could be, I even searched Google. No chance. Your books sounds great

I can relate to the heat - the heat index here in MS where I am has been up to 115 and we have humidity! ICK! My parents live in MT and they don't have AC either.

Your books sound really interesting. I'll definitely look them up. Congrats on your new releases!!!

I don't have a clue who the actor is that said that. LOL But I did see Monster House last weekend with our two boys. :)

It is hot where I live. We had central ac installed in June and it is a blessing. :)
I haven't seen History of Violence but I want to. I like Viggo Mortensen.

I have to say I'm not really good at movie trivia, but hubby is and I asked him and he said he thinks is Robert DeNiro but he cant remember the movie now. Anyway just wanted to share. We havent been to the movies lately, the last movie I saw was Superman and I really enjoyed it.

Amy S. said...

Is it from the movie Body Heat?

Rita R. said...

I have been to 1 movie in about 1 year...Superman returns. It was ok. Going on dates with my husband is sooo hard with 3 kids even though they are "grown up".

One thing I'm loving about Lucy's blog party is all of the new (to me) authors I am being introduced to. I'm going to make a note of your new site and definitely check it out.

I can so relate about the heat. I am in northern NY state, near the Canadian border, and it supposedly never gets horribly hot here. Ha! Most of us just have a room A/C in our bedrooms, rather than central air. I can tell you I'm spending lots of time in the bedroom reading, reading, reading.

As for movies, we are mostly DVD renters, although I am still trying to drag dh to see the latest Pirates. Maybe a matinee this week.

Hi Pat!

I just had to check out your site when I saw the link. I have no idea what movie that line is from. I stink at movie trivia and tried researching on the internet with no luck. I can sympathize about the heat. I live in Florida and cannot imagine anyone not having air conditioning. Your books sound intriguing. Always great to learn about a new author.

Judy F said...

I haven't been to a movie in ages. Tried to see the new pirate one a few weeks ago but it was sold out.

Your book sounds great

Lucy Monroe said...

Hmmm...I wrote at a cafe while the kids went to the last movie. I'm trying to think of the last one I saw...it's been a while. But you know one I'm looking forward to? I think it's called "Fly Boys" about WWI Flying Aces.

I was interested in your comments about the heat in Washington. I grew up in Tacoma, married and moved to the midwest!! When I was growing up, I remember we always seemed to have rain. We never made plans around the rain or we would never go anywhere. When we moved back here no one could do anything if it was raining!!

Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest is a good movie that I've seen. Unfortunately I'm not much of a movie person so I can't recommend any. I just had to Pirates because of Orlando Bloom. lol I won't even go to watch Lady in the Water. It looks to scary. I hate movies like that. lol

I haven't been able to firgure out what movie your quotes from.

AmberPackard said...

The DaVinci Codewas a good movie I also watched Cars with my neices and nephew.

Amy said...

The last movie my hubby and I went to see was X-Men III. It was great. Would like to see Super Man returns but may wind up waiting for it to get to DVD.

I love your book covers, Pat. They're so cute!

Pat White, Romance Author said...

AMY!!! You win the prize for guessing the movie: BODY HEAT. And the actor was William Hurt.

As for other movies ... Mel, I really enjoyed LADY IN THE WATER. Many critics did not. I thought the movie was very original and engaging. I liked Monster House, but not as much as Monsters, Inc. What did you think, Shelmel?

Lucy, FLYBOYS looks awesome. Can see why you're looking forward to it.

Bamabelle, I loved IN HER SHOES as well. What a great flick.

Looking foward to MIAMI VICE this weekend.

Talk at ya' later.

robynl said...

We have to travel 50 + miles each way to get to the movies so needless to say we don't go very often. We buy DVD's or watch them on TV.
Not a clue to which movies that saying comes from.

Hi, Pat :-)
Don't know what line that movie came from, but I can't wait to find out :-)
The last movie I saw was The Lake House with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. I really enjoyed it, and was holding my breath wondering how it was going to end. Great movie, I recommend it :-)

Everyone who hasn't definitely needs to see Pirates 2. I've been exploring my new obsession with Johnny Depp on my blog. :)

I'm having a movie-fest this weekend, my mom will be watching the kids. We're going to see Lady in the Water (love him!) and Miami Vice.

It's hot down south too. Phew! This summer I've seen Superman and Cars. Can't wait to see Miami Vice. I can't think of what movie that quote is from, but I'm guessing it's Viggo Mortenson.

The quote is from Body Heat one of my favorite movies.

I love movies. Currently, I love Serenity, a Joss Whedon film.

Oh, if you want the name of the actor, it is William Hurt. Did you see him in Jane Eyre. Yumm

It never ceases to amaze me how some places view AC as an option! A belief that is unheard of in the South. Stay inside during the day and keep those drink coming! With or without the happy juice, your choice.
Your quote is from the movie Body Heat, but I thought it was OK you can stand next to me, as long as you don't talk about the heat

Hi Pat I live about 2 hours sounds of atlanta and it's definitely been hot here the last couple of weeks. I went to see pirates of the carribean dead man's chest and it was fantastic. Sorry have no idea what movie that is from.

I know all about the heat in Washington. I was in Seattle this weekend to see the Mariners play Boston (the Mariners lost)... and boy was it hot! Even at 7pm it was at least 90 out with humidity. Now, I live on the other side of the state... and while we've had 90+ degree temps, it is without humidity, so it's a little easier to handle!

I love sport themed books and I'm ashamed to say that I've not read yours. However, you have been added to that ever-expanding tbb list! I look forward to reading them.

Hi Pat

I went with my 2 teenage daughters to see "The Devil Wears Prada" and we had a great time. Meryll Streep reminded me of Cruella De Ville in 101 Dalmations. She was the villain that wanted to make a fur coat with all the dog fur.

I sent you an email about the actor as I'm not sure if we are to email the answer or post it.

I'll watch for your books releasing. Congrats!

Pat White, Romance Author said...

Catslady, thanks, I'm glad you liked GOT A HOLD ON YOU. Jenniferl, actually he makes mention of the heat twice, the second time to his friends, the cop and DA.

You guys have been so great! Thanks for making my first blog experience so much fun.

Jodi said...

The last movie that I saw was Over The Hedge. We took my 4 year old for her birthday.
I can't even tell you what the last "adult" movie was that I watched!

KimW said...

Hi Pat! Nice to see you. I've read all your books and really enjoy them. I'll have to watch for the release of these two.

I live outside Chicago and today it was 96 degrees and the humidity was really high. Had a whole bunch of bad hair days lately cause of that. haha!

Pat White, Romance Author said...

Catslady, thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed GOT A HOLD ON YOU! Jenniferl, actually William Hurt makes mention of the heat later in the flick when he's talking to the cop and DA.

Oh, and if a movie called "Little Miss Sunshine" comes your way, you might want to see it. It sounds like a quirky one.

Anyone have a good/different recipe for iced tea? Don't laugh. I'm out of ideas and getting bored with iced green tea.

Oh, meant to mention that my new website is going up in a few weeks and I'll be hosting a new contest so check back, K?

Cheers!

Afraid I don't recognize the quote, but the consensus of guesses so far seems to indicate Viggo -- sigh! Gotta love Viggo;).

The most recent movie I saw (and it's been awhile) is the remake of the Pink Panther with Steve Martin. His accent was cracking me up!

Pat - I can sympathise with you suffering the heat. We Aussies get quite a lot of it here! But it's winter at the moment so quite mild. It seems strange to be hearing about the heatwaves you're getting in the northern hemisphere.

What makes me wilt is just thinking about how our great grandmothers survived the long hot summers with long sleeves, long skirts, petticoats, corsets etc. Let's not go there.

Had to post in answer to your blog since I've actually been to the movies recently! I took my parents to see 'Ballet Russes', a wonderful film. The interviews with various dancers in their 80s and 90s - still so full of energy and love of life - were really inspiring!

Am hoping to see 'Jindabyne' soon which is getting rave reviews from the people who've seen it here and 'Lake House' which sounds intriguing.

Congratulations on the launch of the website and on the upcoming releases!

Kiki said...

While you'r all sweltering away, I'm sitting here in a fleece jumper with a mug of tea. ^_^ I love winter.

Good movies? PIRATES, of course! Funniest movie I've seen all year.
I'm hearing a lot of mixed opinions about Lady in the Water, so I think I'll wait for the DVD release.
Didn't like DWP the book, so that movie is a definite miss for me.

Pam P. said...

Nice to meet you Pat, will check out your books.

Haven't been to a movie recently, but one I'm planning to see later this week is The Lake House, because it involves time travel. I love reading time travel books, so it will be interesting to see how a movie with the theme plays out.

It has definitely been hot lately! I grew up in San Diego and my parents didn't have AC until a few years ago. We suffered through some hot summers, but this one is the worst I remember. I'm so glad they have AC now!

As for movies, I think my favorite one lately is Superman Returns followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

I'm kind of wanting to see Step Up and Invincible in the coming months. I just saw a preview for Stranger Than Fiction and that one looks interesting as well though it doesn't come out til fall:)

I'm bad with recalling quotes from movies, so I'm not sure which one your quote is from. I'm interested to find out, though. I'll have to read through the comments to see if others know it!

Sandra08081998 said...

Hi Pat!

I live in North Carolina and yes it has been hot! There have been days when all you can do is spend them in water (pools, lakes, or head to the ocean). Otherwise, they are unbearable. I have seen a good movie lately. I took my five year old to see Monster House and we both enjoyed it. It was a really cute movie!

Cryna said...

Hi Pat

I have never read any of your books, but will be looking into them and the Intrigue that is coming out should be sent to me automatically.........

I am not much of a movie buff, so have not got a clue as to which movie that would be from.

Sorry to say I have no clue about the movie but your books sound great.

I think the weather is wild all over, we have been getting really hot weather up here in Canada as well, with no rain in the forcast, and we usually have rain as well.

Hi Pat!
It sounds like you saw some great movies this weekend. Sorry about the heatwave. It has been incredibly hot here in Casper, WY around the 100's. It is crazy that a/c is not around. I bet you were sweltering.

I saw Clerks II this weekend and I thought that it was hysterical, but then I love Kevin Smith. I really want to see Pirates and I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I will have to think on that quote.

I love romantic comedy, but then again I like all genre's. Your books sound great Pat. Putting you on my TBR list right now.

I don't know what movie that quote came from, but then again I don't watch many movie's.

And I know all about the heat. I don't mind the heat, I find it relaxing at times. But it would be nice to jump in a pool or visit my parents' who live on the beach, it can get very cool on a hot and sweltering day. At times I really don't know how people can stand living without A/C, that cool air on a hot day can be relaxing also.

Hi Pat, I got William Hurt from BODY HEAT with "You can stand next to me as long as you don't talk about the heat. You have the ass of a great artist. If I pet you, would you follow me home? ..."

Can't seem to find "Whatever you do, don't talk about the heat." Need to go search out the movie.
